We started out tracing things to make our shrinky dinks. They reached the height of their popularity in the 1980s and are still available from retailers. Fancy creating a https://shrinky-dink.com/ set of Paris inspired jewelry, all using shrink plastic?

Shrinky Dinks started as large, thin sheets of plastic that kids could draw on with colored pencils or markers. This accidental invention soon became a household name, and by 1975, Shrinky Dinks hit store shelves, quickly becoming a beloved craft for children across America. You came up with the perfect solution here in 2014 and 5 years later, I’m about to try it! In the end, this is after we shrunk it in the oven. It will take about 5 to 10 minutes depending on the size of your Shrinky dink.

Kids can draw, trace or colour a picture on the special plastic sheet then watch it magically shrink in size in the oven! If you love our Shrinky Sheets, who not check out our huge range of other Arts and Crafts, as well as Sand Art and Plaster Painting Packs. Use of shading and patterns will add dimension and class to your art. Either trace or draw freehand your favourite pictures or images on to the plastic using good quality pencils or permanent markers.

More DIY Jewelry Projects

The possibilities for fun jewelry designs are unlimited; let your imagination run wild! Just three easy steps, and you’ll have an original piece of plastic artwork. While your plastic art is baking, you’ll see the edges curl up, but don’t panic! Then you bake for the amount of time according to the brand of plastic you’re using.

  • When selecting a plastic for your shrinky dink project, it’s crucial to consider the desired shrinkage ratio and how it will affect the final product.
  • Shrinky Dinks were this fantastic craft that was hugely popular in the 80’s.
  • “When removed from the oven, it is one-third its original size and nine times thicker.”
  • Shrinky Dinks are available in various varieties, including kits for making jewelry, magnets, keychains, and much more.

This was the perfect rainy day activity when you were looking for something a little more interactive than your colouring book. You could make jewellery, game pieces, gift or pet tags, magnets, ornaments, zipper pulls, bike plates, traced photos and key chains. However, it is recommended to keep small plastic pieces and sharp objects like scissors away from young children to prevent accidents or injuries.

Can I Print On Shrink Film?

Colored #5 plastic can be used for Shrinky Dinks, but keep in mind that the colors may change or darken when heated. Yes, you can use a clear acrylic sealant or mod podge to protect the designs and add a glossy finish. Always supervise children when using heat tools like ovens or heat guns, and ensure proper ventilation when heating plastic.

Heart String Lights

Leave a larger border at the top where you will be hole punching to add your keychain ring later. Having said that, we did notice some alcohol markers product more vibrant colors better than others so you will have to experiment with your set and see! Stay away from water based markers or waxy colored pencils or crayons that won’t hold the colors well after heating. When your strip comes out of the oven, you’ll have to work quickly – you only have about 10 seconds before it has cooled and becomes rigid. Don’t worry if it looks like it’s stuck together – in my experience it always flattens out as it continues to shrink.

Remember when choosing your colors that they will darken as your pet tag bakes! For best design results, color the tag in lighter colors, then write your pet’s name with a black permanent marker over the colored design. Shrink plastic is great for making fun “jewelry” for your pet’s, too! You can find literally hundreds of examples of shrink-plastic jewelry designs online. Flowers and eggs colored in pastel shades can be made into pretty Easter jewelry.

Cutting and Hole Punching

Experimenting with different coloring techniques, using stencils or stamps, and practicing with scrap pieces of polystyrene can help you perfect your Shrinky Dink designs. Shrinky Dinks are surprisingly durable once they have been shrunk and hardened. How durable are Shrinky Dink designs once they are shrunk? Yes, Shrinky Dinks are made from non-toxic polystyrene materials that are safe for children to handle.

Shrinky Dink paper will shrink to 20% of original size so make sure to get an idea of how big you want your final design to be. I was so happy to share and enjoy this fun craft with my daughter. With tape, stick your plastic sheet to your monitor (seems cruel right? lol ) and start tracing! Google some free digital stamps, choose your image and open it in a new tab. SHRINKY DINKS shrink to approximately 1/3rd their original size and actually become 9 times thicker. Kids adore watching their designs change shape and size, and adults love how easy and tidy the whole project is.
